Technology is the path to the future. Sometimes my kids are able to unlock features of my phone I didn't even know existed. Last night I left my phone on the couch while I stepped into the kitchen to start cooking. I came back to find 30 pictures and 7 videos of my kid's noses. As we were driving last week, I heard my oldest from the back yell, "Hey Siri, play Paw Patrol on apple music." I died laughing when it started to play through the speakers. Technology is all around us and although I am not a fan of copious amounts of screentime, it is a necessary part of our world. I have divided today's activities into screen and screen-free ideas so you can mix and match to suit your screen time rules while still introducing your kids to technology.

Introducing technology activities to toddlers can be a great way to familiarize them with digital tools while promoting early learning and creativity. Here are some technology-related activities for toddlers:
1. Interactive Learning Apps: There are numerous educational apps designed for toddlers that focus on early math, reading, and problem-solving skills. These apps often use colorful graphics and interactive features to engage young learners. The Amazon Fire tablet is a great place to find kid-friendly learning apps. I love that it comes with a 2 year replacement guarantee with parental controls.
2. Virtual Field Trips: Take virtual field trips with your toddler to explore different parts of the world or visit museums through online videos and interactive websites.
3. Educational Videos: Select age-appropriate educational videos that can teach toddlers about animals, shapes, numbers, and more. Be sure to supervise screen time and choose high-quality content. Sesame Street is a classic that keeps kids engaged and active.
4. Video Calls with Family: Use video calls to connect with family members or friends. This not only introduces toddlers to technology but also allows them to engage in social interactions.
5. Music and Sound Exploration: Let toddlers experiment with music apps or simple sound-making programs to create their own tunes and learn about different sounds.
6. Digital Puzzles and Games: Choose age-appropriate puzzle apps and games that can help toddlers develop problem-solving and cognitive skills.
Always monitor screen time, ensuring that it remains balanced with other activities. Additionally, use technology activities as a supplement to traditional hands-on play and learning experiences.

If you're looking for screen-free technology activities to engage toddlers, you can explore activities that don't involve electronic devices but still introduce them to the concepts of technology and innovation. Here are some screen-free technology activities for toddlers:
1. Building with Blocks: Encourage the use of wooden or magnetic building blocks to help toddlers explore structural engineering and problem-solving. Magna-Tiles are my boys absolute favorite. They are easy to use and store easily. They aid in the development of fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, cognitive skills, executive functioning, and creativity. Here is a great starter set.
2. Gear Play: Provide gear toys or building sets that allow toddlers to experiment with gears and understand basic mechanical principles. Here is a set of magnetic gears. These are great for your refrigerator. Keep your kids entertained while you cook.
3. Marble Runs: Set up marble runs or ball tracks that allow toddlers to explore gravity, motion, and cause-and-effect relationships. My boys have this magnetic marble run. It also provides great entertainment and is perfect for the refrigerator. Just me mindful of the small marbles which could pose a choking hazard for younger children.
4. Sensory Play: Sensory bins with various textures and materials can introduce toddlers to concepts like sorting, pouring, and measuring. You can use materials you already have around the house.
5. Tinkering Activities: Provide safe tools and materials for toddlers to tinker with, fostering their curiosity and creativity through hands-on exploration.
These screen-free technology activities for toddlers not only introduce them to STEM concepts but also encourage hands-on learning and exploration, which is essential for their cognitive and physical development.
