My mother is an elementary school librarian, so reading was always important growing up. When I had kids, I wondered how I could instill a love of reading in my children. My oldest is quite the reader, even though he can't read independently. His bookshelves are packed and he has memorized several of his favorite books and can even re-tell them from memory. For his first birthday, he wanted a Pete the Cat party, a popular kid's book character. Now that I have 3 children, finding the time to read to them individually is tough. I began looking for ways I could continue to foster a love of reading in my children, even when I couldn't read to them.

  1. I Spy Books are a great option for the early reader. They can see the objects they are supposed to find in the larger picture and can enjoy the book without anyone reading to them.

  2. Yoto is another great device. It has a HUGE library of available books that range from early readers all the way to grade-level chapter books. It is easy to use for toddler hands that haven't quite fine-tuned their fine motor skills. It is also screen-free!!! That is such a bonus in the digital age. It is also great for quiet time for those who have outgrown naptime.

  3. Audiobooks are another great option. There are a ton of tablets available today and here is one I think is user-friendly for kids. It is also more durable for accident-prone kids. It also comes with a 2-year worry-free guarantee!

  4. Go on an adventure! Your local library is a mecca for resources and children's programming. Find a storytime or character party to attend. You can also browse their large selection of books to check out. Don't know where to start? One of my favorite children's authors is Mo Willems. He wrote the Elephant and Piggie series and the Pigeon series. They are funny and relatable for both children and adults.

  5. Another great way to expand your personal library is to enroll in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. You will receive free books for any children in your household under the age of 5. Check your local availability here.

Foster a love for reading early in life and it will last a lifetime. I love cuddling up with my kids and reading them bedtime stories. Reading has stimulated conversations about topics that might be hard to discuss otherwise and led to many funny memories. Grab a book or turn on an audiobook and watch your child's creativity come to life.
