Let me set the scene. We are in a restaurant with 2 rambunctious boys. The waitress brings 2 water glasses for the boys that are adult-size, very full, and without lids. They begin whining that the food is taking too long. They are wiggling in the booth, constantly wanting to change which side they are sitting on. "Mommy sit a me." I begin to sweat in fear of the embarrassment that is soon to follow. The food is delivered and my youngest son drops ketchup all down his shirt while my oldest is constantly needing more (more water, more ketchup, more napkins, just more). My youngest, the hurricane, reaches for more ketchup and knocks his water over flooding the table and his clothes with ice cold water. We left the restaurant on edge and ready to get home. I decided then that we needed a change. I created this survival guide to make restaurants a fun experience.

Dining out with children can be a delightful experience when approached with careful planning and a positive mindset. I've compiled a guide to help you and your family enjoy restaurant outings with ease.
1. Choose Family-Friendly Establishments:
Opt for restaurants that cater to families, offering kid-friendly menus and a welcoming atmosphere. Look for places with high chairs, changing facilities, and a staff accustomed to serving families.
2. Timing is Key:
Consider early meal times to avoid peak hours and long waits. This not only minimizes stress but also allows your kids to enjoy their meals without becoming overly tired or impatient. I try to arrive at a restaurant 30 minutes prior to when we typically have dinner at home.
3. Pack Snacks and Distractions:
Keep hunger at bay by having a stash of healthy snacks on hand. Additionally, bring small toys or coloring books to entertain your children while waiting for food. Distractions can make the dining experience more enjoyable for everyone. I pack an "Uh-Oh" bag to help when distractions are needed. Below are the items that have been the most effective in providing a distraction: magnetic puzzles found here, popper fidget toys found here, interactive tablet found here (only include if this meets your family's screen-time rules), a busy board found here, and Squigz found here. We also include a coloring book or activity book, crayons, and a few books.
4. Set Clear Expectations:
Before entering the restaurant, talk to your kids about the behavior you expect. Reinforce good manners, like using indoor voices, staying seated, and being polite to the restaurant staff. Positive reinforcement can go a long way. We also role play these manners at home while we play restaurant to give our kids extra practice.
5. Order Wisely:
Explore the menu for child-friendly options or consider sharing adult meals. Many restaurants offer half-portions or customizable dishes, ensuring that your child gets a meal they enjoy.
6. Be Prepared for Messes:
Accidents happen, especially with young children. Bring wipes, a change of clothes, and any necessary cleaning supplies to handle spills or messy situations gracefully.
7. Take Breaks:
If your child is becoming restless, consider taking short breaks during the meal. A quick walk around the restaurant or a visit to the restroom can provide a change of scenery and help reset their mood.
8. Express Gratitude:
Teach your children the importance of expressing gratitude. Encourage them to thank the restaurant staff for their service. This not only reinforces manners but also sets a positive example for your kids.
With thoughtful planning and a proactive approach, dining out with kids can be a joyous and stress-free experience. Remember to choose family-friendly establishments, pack essentials, and create an environment where both you and your children can savor the moments spent together at the dining table. Remember that each child is unique, and flexibility is important. With preparation and a positive attitude, dining out with kids can be a delightful experience for everyone.
